Chinese New Year Light-Up 2017 at Chinatown

More than 4,000 handcrafted lanterns – the largest number for the event yet, will light up the annual Chinese New Year Street Light-Up in Chinatown along Pagoda Street, Smith Street, Sago Street, Temple Street and Trengganu Street. The light up will run for 7 weeks until 25 February 2017, while welcoming the Year of the Rooster on 28 January 2017.

Besides the light up, visitors can enjoy a host of activities, including the Festive Street Bazaar. With a variety of stalls lining up the streets of Chinatown, visitors can feast on mouth-watering New Year delicacies, enjoy the brilliant lights and decorations of the stalls; and shop for the many New Year traditional goodies from cookies, decorative items, waxed duck and preserved fruits to potted plants and clothing.

There will be nightly stage shows at Kreta Ayer Square, near the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple and Museum, such as vibrant Chinese cultural performances, festive songs, music and dance performances by local entertainers and troupes from China. Celebrate the peak of the festivities by joining the New Year countdown between 9:30pm to 12:30am on 27 January at New Bridge Road and Eu Tong Seng Street, hosted by MediaCorp artistes with lively performances from a medley of festive songs, skits to interactive games as the countdown party culminates with rousing firecrackers and a spectacular display of fireworks.

The largest annual street performance and float parade in Asia, Chingay parade, will make an appearance in Chinatown this year on 12 February to bring the celebrations to a great height but also marking the end of the Chinese New Year Celebrations. Head down for a vibrant night that includes special performances by local and overseas performers and not forgetting the 10 over beautifully decorated and lighted float.
